As a Professional Makeup Artist and a former Bride-to-Be (I’m married now!), I get the stress that comes with choosing the right vendor. Here are a few tips to selecting a makeup artist that will fit your needs.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
If you have a few artists in mind, check out their portfolio. Wedding blogs, referrals, agencies are a great place to start.
SET UP A CONSULTATION
Some artists charge for their consultations, but trust me it will be worth it. The good thing is that most consultation fees are taken off the total price if you choose to book them (this is what I do as well).
IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY
Don’t narrow it down to price. The old saying “you get what you pay for” can be accurate in this case. I’m always a fan of balancing, getting what I want and staying within budget. Remember that this is your special day. Don’t cut corners. Feel free to splurge a little!
BE PREPARED
Bring photos to your consultation (or that Pinterest Board we have been building. During your consultation, you and your artist will talk about your ideas, look at photos, and try a few looks. Don’t forget to bring looks for your bridal party as well.
BE YOU
No seriously! I can’t count the times that I have had clients who have never worn makeup, bring me a photo of someone who has a ton of it on. They ask me to duplicate the look. As the expert, I advise them not to step too far out of their zone. The end result, it’s too much for them. It’s okay to just be you.
DON’T GET SUCKED IN
Be wary of getting sucked into makeup trends (this includes binge watching tutorials on Youtube). Your wedding photos will be timeless. For some brides (like myself), your photos will be centerpieces on tables, decor on your walls. Keeping your makeup classy (but unique to your personal) is your best bet. Trust me!
FEEL A CONNECTION
Choose a makeup artist that understands you and your needs. A Makeup artist should never be pushy and try to sell you on a look or product you don’t want or feel that you need. Don’t get me wrong, He/She is the expert, but they should be able provide great advice on how to achieve the look you desire.
DON’T DYI
When it’s all said and done, I know it can be stressful! However, if you give yourself plenty of time to seek out your makeup artist, do your research and set up consultations, you will be fine.
